We had to create a full Elizabethan hairstyle on our partners for our assessment. We were given sheets of what the hair had to include. The front could be curled or frizzed, but it must be heart shaped. The back must be all up in a bun shape. It can incorporate plaits or twists. You can use ribbons, pearls, anything that you think gives your hairstyle and Elizabethan feel.
As I have already worked with my models hair, I knew the type and texture. I started off with parting the hair down the middle and sectioning the hair at the front for the fringe and I then sectioned a bigger chunk of hair so that it would be enough to cover the padding. I tied the remaining hair at the back into a ponytail and plaited down the side of the head where the padding would sit, I then started to crimp the section.

I then put the padding in and tucked the hair neatly over it and I feel that I have covered it a lot better than when I first styled my models hair.
I think that I have got the hang of using padding in the hair now. I feel more confident in leaving enough hair to cover it and to also tuck it under itself. I have found a technique that works well for me; I take the ends of the hair and then roll them over between my two fingers and tuck them under the padding. I then get kirby grips to secure the hair and spread it evenly over the top. I repeated this step to the over side of the head.
I then took one side of the parting and then did a mini french plait either side of the hair and secured with behind the ear. I then took the section behind the plait and divided it into little sections so that I could frizz the fringe. Once I had done this, I took the frizz out and started to tease it and brush it out.

Here is a photograph of the side of the head that I finished - I took the frizzing and placed it over the padding to make sure that I covered all of the padding and so that it couldn't be seen through the hair. I am pleased with how well I have covered it.
With the back of the hair, I twisted it into a bun. If I had more time then I would have used the bun technique that I learnt in my lecture a few weeks ago as I feel it would have given it a better finish but I have included all the techniques that I needed to had this have been my final assessment.

I think I have improved a lot since last time I practiced on my models hair. I am really pleased with how it has turned out - each side is equal and symmetrical and I have covered the padding well and you can't see it through the hair. I had a plan of what I wanted to achieve for this lesson and I think it helped me manage my time better. Although I didn't have time to do a proper bun for the back of the head, I still managed to complete a finished hairstyle that included the techniques that needed to be incorporated. I feel a lot more confident now about creating hairstyles now and I am excited to design my contemporary hairstyles and work on the hair for the assessment!
